CASA Hosts Event at New Cheshire County Jail

CASA OF NH NEWS — (Apr 06, 2010) —

Forty people descended on the new Cheshire County Jail for the first public preview of the cutting edge facility.   The event, hosted by CASA of NH in partnership with Cheshire County Corrections, served as a fundraising event for CASA.

The evening’s program included four speakers: CASA’s President/CEO, Marty Sink, Patti Carbonaro of DCYF, Assistant Commissioner William McGonagle and Superintendent VanWickler.  Their remarks helped the audience gain an understanding of how children and families are affected by incarceration and what New Hampshire as well as the greater United States Justice and Correctional Systems are doing to help break the cycle of abuse through increased attention to preventative social services.

The new Jail kitchen was tried for the first time, with Jail food service staff preparing a great spread of Hors d’oeuvres. In addition, Unbridled Chocolates donated a table full of sweets for participants to enjoy.  Participants took a self-guided tour and were educated by a group of Keene State students about the different parts of the facility.

The Jail is set to “open for business,” transferring prisoners from the current county jail to the new facility sometime in late April.
